The Benefits of Thermal Spraying

THE BASICS OF THERMAL SPRAYING

Thermal spraying is a term that we use to describe our repair processes at New Metal surfaces. Thermal spray coatings are created by accelerating small particles of heated metal or ceramic towards the work surface so that it mechanically deforms and bonds resulting in a dense coating.

Thermal spray coatings are used to improve or restore the surface of a component. Using thermal spray, we can apply coatings to a wide range of materials utilizing a wide range of material types.  We can restore dimensional accuracy of metallic parts and cost effectively improve wear resistance, corrosion resistance, or thermal conductivity.

Currently at New Metal Surfaces, we offer our customers three thermal spray coating options:

At New Metal Surfaces we primarily apply our coatings to either, restore a damaged or worn components, or to enhance a new component. Let’s look at the advantages of applying thermal spray coatings in both situations.

RESTORING DAMAGED COMPONENTS

Arguably one of the most common uses of thermal spray coatings are to restore a damaged component back to working order. Many of our customers require us to restore the dimensional accuracy of various components in order to get their machinery back in action. Some of the benefits of using thermal spray coatings to repair worn components are;

  • A reduced cost to restore the component compared to replacing it with a brand-new component. In many situations, it is far more cost effective for our customers to choose to repair their components using thermal spray coatings than to buy replacements.

  • Thermal spray coatings can extend the lifecycle of a component. Depending on the environment that the component is exposed to, we can tailor our coatings so that the component will not only be restored but will last longer due to the properties of the coating.

  • Another advantage of thermal spray coatings is the wide range of materials that can be applied. Materials include metals, alloys, ceramics and more. Depending on the process used, the material can be in powder or wire form. At New Metal Surfaces we work with you to determine what material or combination of materials will form the best coating for your specific needs.

ENHANCING NEW COMPONENTS

An increasingly popular use of thermal spray coatings is to apply coatings to new components before they are exposed to their operating environments. This enables us to work with our customers to develop coatings specific to the intended service. Some of the benefits of applying thermal spray coatings to new components are;

  • Increased service life of the component. When we apply a coating that is customized for the conditions that the component will be exposed to, we are able to extend the life cycle beyond what would normally be possible with an uncoated component.

  • Decreasing down-time. Lower wear and corrosion rates result in less maintenance, which is cost effective for our customers in the long term.

  • Customized solutions. By apply thermal spray coatings to new components, we can work with our customers to customize the characteristics of the coating to suit the intended application of the component. For example, we can provide coatings to increase resistance to corrosion, reduce electrical conductivity, and much more. Speak to us today to see how we can tailor a coating for your specific needs.
