Gear Drive Services has been a valued customer of New Metal Surfaces for many years. They continually trust our team to deliver high quality work to restore their worn and damaged components.
For this job, Gear Drive Services engaged us to repair the worn seal journal on their planetary carrier back to better than new.
1. Our team of specialists began by inspecting the damaged area and providing a recommendation for the best material. This was done by considering the substrate material, as well as what application and environment the component would be used in.
2. Once decided, we began by prepping the component for spraying. This involves machining the seal area undersize using our Vertical Borer — a process that preps the surface so that it's ready to be grit-blasted and sprayed.
3. Once prepped, our spray technicians grit-blasted the surface, and applied a HVOF coating to the damaged seal area. This coating was chosen for its superior bond strength (compared to Arc Spray coatings), resulting in a denser, harder coating that has little porosity.
4. After spraying the seal area, the component was put back on the Vertical Borer to be finish machined to its final dimensions.
5. The finished result is a restored seal area that will perform better and last longer than the original.
“We’ve worked with New Metal Surfaces for many years and were once again really happy with the service provided to us.”
